Your
foody hosts at Can Torras
David and Karen met at
Nottingham University studying agriculture and nutrition. They share a love of travel, food, gardens
and all things ecological, and left the UK for the Caribbean island of Dominica for seven years from
the late eighties, and then to their new life in Spain eleven years ago.
They enjoy life at Can Torras with family, friends, volunteers and
their many
furry and feathered friends.
David was born in Wiltshire.
He trained in plant pathology before specialising in
tropical fruit and vegetables in his work for the Foreign Office in
London and the Caribbean. In the last fifteen years he has worked all
over the world in the field of organic agriculture, but is always
happy to get back home to Can Torras and find time for his organic veggie
garden! Karen is from Yorkshire, a nutritionist, who worked in
sales, marketing and training in the food
industry before joining David on his travels. The women in Karen's
family have been cooks and bakers for four generations, so there is a
strong family tradition to uphold! Flexibility is the key to
a successful life on the move, so she has set up businesses
in food and catering, exercise and fitness and more recently interior
design and construction, renovating flats in Girona and of course the
old farmhouse of Can Torras! She tends to the flowery bits of the garden and is interested in all things arty.
Visiting
food fairs & eating out is one of the great joys of living in Spain,
where a long lunch with fresh, local ingredients is an essential part of
life. There are hundreds of great restaurants to sample close to Can
Torras and it will be a life time's work for Karen and David to try as
many as they can! Meals at home reflect the changing seasons, the
produce growing in their garden and the many places they have visited.
Currently the combination of Moroccan and Spanish dishes are inspiring them
after a trip to Marrakech. One of their dreams is to restore the old
bread oven at Can Torras for wood-baked breads so typical of both
countries.
Breakfast at Can Torras includes a
choice of cereals, juice, fruits, yogurt, breads and home made jams, with a hot dish
changing every day. This could be wild mushrooms and our own bright
yellow eggs or perhaps a sweet dish like banana pancakes and local honey. Dinners are always based on local dishes
but adapted to suit the visitor's palate and dietary restrictions. Last year's mouth-watering
favourites were undoubtedly goat cheese & roasted sunflower seed salad,
followed by corn-fed chicken, slow cooked with rosemary and lemon peel, and finally
vanilla ice cream with baked plums.
Recently we have signed on as hosts
for WWOOF (World Wide
Opportunities on Organic Farms) and
HelpX so you may meet people from around
the world working in our organic garden. If you are interested in doing
the same, find out more on their website.
In Catalonia Karen and David have found good food and great company,
but to be honest we still search for the secret of the 28 hour day to
enjoy it all! However, with very little persuasion, we will take a break
in the evening and join you under the pergola for a glass of wine. It
gives us great pleasure to see Can Torras and it's surroundings through
the eyes of our visitors.
